Hairwell 101

While technically this is Hairwell’s inaugural blog, what I really want to do is use this opportunity to welcome you to our site and to our company. I truly believe Hairwell has so much to offer, and we’ll certainly address those things in future blogs. But first, I want to share a little about me and about my hopes for what I want Hairwell to be.

As I mentioned in my bio, Hairwell has been a dream of mine for quite some time. Like all of us, I spent I-can’t-even-count-how-many-years doing things to my hair that were borderline crazy, all with the hopes of reaching that perfect style. As a Black girl and later a Black woman, this meant treatments, chemicals, straightening, curling, permanents…the list goes on. Anything – and everything, come to think of it – was on the table if it meant avoiding a Bad Hair Day, because as we all know, bad hair days are real! And they can ruin more than just a day. Trust me.

Part of me asked why I was putting myself, not to mention my hair, through it. Was it peer pressure? Maybe. We all fall victim to that now and then, and young girls and women can be so incredibly susceptible, right? Or perhaps it was misplaced cultural conformity. As I reached adulthood, finished school, and started my career, I sometimes wondered if I was trying to force my natural hair into styles that were thought to be “less big,” “less curly,” or the so-called “more professional,” whatever that means. Of course, there’s always the possibility that I was uninspired to take on the challenges of caring for my hair by myself. Let’s be honest: it’s nice to go to a salon on a regular basis, be pampered, and walk out with a great new ‘do.! Whatever the reason, my hair finally rebelled. It was as if it was telling me that it was losing its ability to snap back and remain healthy. And that’s when I decided to go natural. But throughout my journey, the Wash Day ritual was always a part of my experience. And it was always a mess, regardless of what style I was wearing at the time. That’s when I began creating a solution that finally became the reality that is now My Mane Cape, and soon after, Hairwell was born.

My goal for Hairwell is to bring great products to women who want the best for their hair. But we don’t have to stop there. I want us, together, to build an all-inclusive community that is supportive, informative, and last but definitely not least, fun. I envision Hairwell as a place where we can learn from one another, share ideas and experiences, lift each other’s spirits, and have the confidence to be totally ourselves on good days, bad days, and all the days in between. I want each of us to be secure in knowing that we’re beautiful, even on the very worst bad hair day! And encourage one another to be kind to ourselves and our sisters. Yes, we’re all different (which should always be celebrated), but there’s so much more that we as women have in common, not the least of which is wanting our hair to look fabulous.

I look forward to exploring these things with you. I know it is going to be a wonderful ride.

Ayesha
